Starting from scratch
With no existing global system in place for instructors, creating a new portal from scratch is a big project. While the UX research was going on, I was creating a skeleton of re-usable components that we were going to need.
Starting with a simple design system of Sketch components published to Zeplin, eventually it evolved into a fully fledged system in Storybook. To read more about the design system click here.
Below highlights a few of the many features that were released for instructors.
Instructor calendar
The calendar feature was created to give Berlitz instructors a quick overview of their upcoming lessons, including details about location, type of lesson, lesson status and easy access to instructor guides.
Instructor availability
Instructors hours are flexible and they don't work the usual 9 to 5. Hours can change on a weekly basis so it's neccessary for the instructor to be able to manage these changes themselves.
In this feature, instructors can view their calendar by week, then click and drag on hours to select the times they would like to be available. Because Berlitz is global and lessons can be taken online all over the world, the calendar system is 24 hrs, however weekly hours are capped depending on the country the instructor resides in.
Instructor lessons
The 'My lessons' feature offers a more in depth look at how a student is progressing. Because students can have multiple instructors, each lesson a instructor needs to know exactly what the student has been working on.
Instructors can view last lessons and goals achieved, any notes previous instructors might have left, what chapter the student is up to, and can view the students learning path, attendance and homework.
